What Is Technical SEO and Why Does It Come Before Everything Else?

Technical SEO is the work done at the infrastructure level of a website. It covers the code, server configuration, crawl settings, URL structure, and performance signals to ensure that search engines can reliably access, understand, and index the pages you want to rank.

 

Think about the sequence: before Google can rank a page, it has to find it, crawl it, render it, understand it, and index it. Technical issues can break any of those steps. A page blocked by a robots.txt rule is invisible to Google no matter how good the content is. A page that takes nine seconds to load on mobile may be crawled and indexed but still lose ranking positions to faster competitors because Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. A site with hundreds of redirect chains may be getting crawled, but the crawl budget is being spent on redirect hops rather than on the pages that matter.

 

On-page SEO and content strategy determine what you rank for. Technical SEO determines whether you rank at all. For most Indian small business websites I audit, at least two or three technical issues are suppressing rankings that good content is already earning on paper. Fixing them is often the fastest route to ranking improvement, faster than writing new content and faster than link building, because the work is already done. The technical problems are just hiding it.

Crawl Audit and Crawl Error Fixing

A crawl audit is a systematic review of every URL on your domain. It maps what Google can access, what it is being blocked from, what it is finding that you did not intend for it to find, and what it cannot find at all. I use Google Search Console data alongside a full site crawl to identify the gap between what is indexed and what should be.

 

Crawl error fixing covers 404 pages that should either be redirected or reinstated, redirect chains where one redirect points to another redirect with each hop losing equity and wasting crawl budget, pages blocked by robots.txt that should be accessible, pages blocked by noindex tags applied accidentally, and soft 404s which are pages returning a 200 status code but containing no meaningful content that Google eventually treats as thin or non-existent.

 

For a dental clinic I worked with in Delhi NCR, a misconfigured robots.txt file was blocking 40 service pages from Google entirely. The pages had good content. The title tags were correct. The links from the homepage were in place. But Google had never indexed any of them. After fixing the crawl block, all 40 pages were indexed within four weeks and several moved to page one for location-specific queries within two months. No new content was written. The technical fix was the only change.

Core Web Vitals Optimisation

Core Web Vitals are Google’s three measurable page experience signals that directly affect both rankings and user behaviour.

 

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): How fast the main content of a page loads. Google’s threshold for a passing score is under 2.5 seconds. Most Indian websites I audit are failing this, not because the server is slow, but because images are not compressed, render-blocking JavaScript is loaded before content, or a third-party font is delaying the largest element on the page.

 

INP (Interaction to Next Paint): How quickly the page responds when a user taps a button or clicks a link. INP replaced FID as a Core Web Vital in March 2024 and measures real-world interactivity across the entire page session. Failing INP is common on pages with heavy JavaScript frameworks or too many third-party scripts running simultaneously.

 

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): How much the page layout moves around while loading. A page where elements jump position as images load or ads appear creates both a poor user experience and a failing CLS score. Fixing CLS usually involves setting explicit dimensions on images and iframes and controlling when dynamic content loads.

 

Core Web Vitals optimisation is not about passing a test. It is about making your pages load fast and feel stable for the majority of your visitors who are on 4G mobile connections in Indian cities. A page that loads in under two seconds retains significantly more visitors than one that loads in five, and that visitor behaviour is something Google’s systems measure and use as a ranking input.

Website Speed Optimisation

Page speed is both a ranking signal and a conversion signal. Slow pages lose visitors before they read a word of your content. Website speed optimisation covers the broader set of performance factors that affect load time across devices and connection speeds.

 

The common speed issues I find on Indian small business websites: uncompressed images such as a 2MB hero image that should be 80KB, no browser caching configured so every visit reloads every asset from scratch, render-blocking CSS and JavaScript that delays the browser from displaying content, unused plugins and scripts loading on every page regardless of whether that page needs them, and no CDN meaning visitors in Mumbai are loading assets from a server in Noida at full latency.

 

I run PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse audits, identify the specific causes of slow load times on your site, and fix them. For WordPress and Elementor sites most changes can be made directly. For changes that require code access I produce developer-ready specifications with clear acceptance criteria.

Indexation and Canonicalisation

Not every page on your site should be indexed. And sometimes the wrong pages are indexed while the right ones are not. Indexation issues are among the most underdiagnosed technical problems on Indian business websites.

 

Canonicalisation problems occur when multiple URLs show the same or very similar content, often caused by URL parameters, trailing slashes, HTTP vs HTTPS, or www vs non-www variations. Google may split ranking signals across these duplicate versions rather than concentrating them on the canonical page. I audit canonicalisation across the full site, identify where canonical tags are missing or pointing to the wrong URL, and implement correct self-referencing or consolidating canonical tags.

 

Indexation audits cover pages returning incorrect status codes, pages with conflicting noindex and canonical signals, pages that Google has crawled but chosen to exclude from the index visible in Search Console’s Excluded tab, and duplicate content across city or service pages that is too similar for Google to distinguish.

Mobile SEO Optimisation

Over 80% of search queries in India happen on mobile devices. Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning the mobile version of your page is what it evaluates for ranking regardless of how good the desktop version looks. Mobile SEO optimisation covers the issues that specifically affect mobile ranking and user experience.

 

This includes viewport configuration to ensure the page scales correctly on small screens, tap target sizing so buttons and links are large enough to tap without hitting adjacent elements, font size legibility on mobile, content parity between mobile and desktop versions since content hidden behind a tab on mobile may not be seen by Google, and mobile-specific speed issues that do not appear on desktop tests.

 

I test on real mobile conditions using throttled connection speeds representative of Indian 4G rather than desktop WiFi, because a page that looks fine in Chrome DevTools can still fail for real users on a train in Delhi.

Robots.txt and XML Sitemap

Your robots.txt file controls what search engine crawlers are allowed to access. An incorrectly configured robots.txt is how entire sections of websites get de-indexed accidentally. I audit the current file, identify rules that are blocking crawl access where they should not be, and check that the rules that should be blocking crawlers such as admin pages, login pages, and duplicate parameter URLs are actually in place.

 

XML sitemaps tell Google which pages you want it to find and index. A sitemap that includes 404 pages, noindex pages, or redirect destinations sends conflicting signals. I clean and restructure sitemaps to include only canonicalised, indexable URLs, submit them to Search Console, and monitor for errors after submission.

Structured Data and Schema Markup

Structured data is how you communicate with search engines and AI systems in machine-readable language rather than relying on them to interpret prose. Schema markup is the implementation of that data using JSON-LD code placed in the page header.

 

For service businesses, the relevant schema types are Service, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList. For e-commerce, Product and Offer schema are the priority. Each schema type makes specific facts machine-readable and eligible for rich result appearances in search results, including business name, service area, FAQ answers, pricing range, and contact details.

 

Schema also directly affects AI Overview eligibility. Google’s AI systems are more likely to cite a page with properly structured data because they can extract specific facts from it without having to interpret the surrounding prose. I implement and validate schema for every page type on your site, test using Google’s Rich Results Test, and monitor for structured data errors in Search Console.

Redirect Audit and Management

Redirect chains where URL A redirects to URL B which redirects to URL C are common on sites that have been live for several years, changed domains, or restructured their URL architecture. Each additional hop in a redirect chain loses some link equity and increases page load time. I map every redirect on the site, identify chains, and consolidate them to single-hop 301 redirects. Redirect loops where two URLs redirect to each other indefinitely are identified and broken.

What Technical SEO Cannot Fix

Technical SEO is a prerequisite for rankings, not a guarantee of them. A technically sound site that has no content, no backlinks, and is targeting terms dominated by national brands with years of authority will still not rank on page one for competitive head terms. Technical fixes remove the barriers between your existing content and the rankings it deserves. They do not create rankings where the underlying content or authority signals do not support them.

 

If your site has a history of manual penalties from purchased links, doorway pages, or cloaked content, a technical audit will surface these but the remediation involves disavow work, content removal, and a reconsideration request. This is not standard technical SEO work. I will tell you when a site’s history requires this kind of remediation rather than pretending a standard technical engagement will resolve it.

 

Technical SEO also cannot fix a situation where changes identified in the audit cannot be implemented because the CMS is locked, the hosting is restrictive, or there is no development resource available. The audit produces a findings document but the ranking improvement does not follow until implementation happens. I flag this at the start of every engagement.

You run an e-commerce site on WooCommerce or Shopify with hundreds or thousands of product and category pages. At scale, technical issues from duplicate content caused by filter parameters, faceted navigation creating thousands of thin URLs, and out-of-stock product pages returning 200 rather than 404 have significant ranking impact.

If your site was launched in the last four weeks and has no indexed pages yet, a technical audit is premature. Let Google index the site first, then use Search Console data to identify what specifically needs attention.

 

If your primary question is why a competitor is ranking above you, the answer is almost always a combination of content quality, authority, and on-page factors rather than a technical issue on your end. Technical SEO fixes your own site’s foundation. It does not directly address a competitor’s advantage.

 

If you need a one-time audit report with no implementation, I can discuss a standalone audit scope. But an audit with no implementation produces no ranking improvement. I will tell you this before you agree to anything. A document describing your site’s problems is only useful if someone acts on it.

My Technical SEO Audit Process

Stage 1: Search Console and Crawl Data Review
I pull Search Console data covering the Coverage, Core Web Vitals, Mobile Usability, and Performance reports and cross-reference with a full site crawl. This produces a map of every URL, its indexation status, any associated errors, and initial speed data. I also review the robots.txt and sitemap files.

 

Stage 2: Issue Prioritisation
Not every technical issue has equal ranking impact. A missing alt text on a decorative image is a different priority than 200 pages blocked by robots.txt. I categorise findings into three tiers. Critical issues directly prevent indexation or significantly suppress rankings. High-priority issues affect user experience and Core Web Vitals scores. Low-priority issues are best practice improvements that matter at scale but are not urgent. You receive this as a documented audit with every issue described in plain terms, not tool-generated jargon.

 

Stage 3: Implementation
For WordPress sites I implement most fixes directly including plugin configuration, image optimisation, robots.txt edits, canonical tag corrections, schema markup, and redirect management. For changes that require developer access such as Core Web Vitals fixes involving JavaScript, hosting-level caching, or CDN configuration, I produce developer-ready specifications with clear acceptance criteria.

 

Stage 4: Verification and Search Console Monitoring
After implementation, I resubmit the sitemap, request indexing for previously blocked pages via Search Console URL Inspection, and monitor the Coverage and Core Web Vitals reports weekly. Crawl improvements typically appear in Search Console within two to four weeks. Ranking improvements that follow from better indexation and speed usually become visible within six to ten weeks.

Realistic Timelines for Technical SEO Results

After implementing crawl fixes such as correcting robots.txt blocks, fixing canonical tags, and resolving redirect chains, Google needs to recrawl and re-evaluate the affected pages. For active sites with regular content updates Googlebot typically returns within one to three weeks. For less active sites it can take four to six weeks.

After Core Web Vitals fixes are implemented and verified, the field data in Google’s Core Web Vitals report updates over a rolling 28-day window. A site that passes the threshold on PageSpeed Insights on day one will not show a pass in the field data report until 28 days of real-user data have accumulated. The ranking benefit follows after the field data update.

After indexation improvements where pages that were previously excluded are now getting indexed, ranking movement on those pages typically begins within four to eight weeks of indexation.

What accelerates results: a site with high crawl frequency, a technically straightforward site without complex JavaScript rendering, and quick implementation of agreed changes. What slows results: a site that Googlebot crawls infrequently, a large site where recrawling all affected pages takes time, or delays in implementing agreed changes.
